“Body safe” is one of the most-used and least-defined phrases in the toy world. No agency certifies toys against it, so it works more like a promise: this material is non-porous, chemically stable, and won’t leach anything into you. Whether the promise holds depends entirely on what the thing is actually made of.
The short version up front: 100% platinum-cure silicone is the material the promise was coined for, and it’s the only material the makers we track pour. The rest of this page is why.
Silicone in one paragraph
Silicone is a synthetic rubber built on a silicon–oxygen backbone, where ordinary plastics use carbon chains. That backbone is what makes it boring in all the right ways: it shrugs off heat (hence bakeware), doesn’t react with much of anything, doesn’t feed bacteria, and doesn’t need the plasticisers that make cheap soft plastics soft. Those plasticisers are the additives behind most of the old “mystery jelly toy” horror stories. Liquid silicone is mixed, poured into a mould, and cured — set solid by a catalyst. The catalyst is what splits the material into the two families that matter.
Platinum cure vs tin cure — the distinction worth learning
Platinum-cure (addition-cure) silicone sets via a platinum catalyst. The reaction is clean: the two components add together with no by-products to speak of, which is why platinum silicones are the ones sold in food-grade and skin-contact formulations, and why they stay dimensionally and chemically stable for years. The trade-offs sit with the maker. Platinum silicone costs more and its cure can be “inhibited” — left sticky — by contact with sulphur, some 3D-print resins, and famously by tin-cure silicone residue. It’s fussy to work with and inert to live with.
Tin-cure (condensation-cure) silicone sets via a tin catalyst, costs less, and is more forgiving in the workshop, which is why it’s popular for mould-making and props. Its cure releases by-products (typically alcohols) as it sets, it keeps evolving and turns brittle as it ages, and tin-cure formulations are generally not offered in skin-contact grades. The mainstream position across the maker community and the material suppliers alike is simple: tin-cure is a workshop material, not an insertable one.

Porous vs non-porous — the property that decides the rest
A non-porous surface has no microscopic openings for fluids and bacteria to settle into. Wash it and it is actually clean; sanitise it and it is actually sanitised. Cured platinum silicone, glass and stainless steel are the classic non-porous toy materials.
A porous surface — TPE, TPR, “jelly”, PVC blends, and most mystery softs — is a microscopic sponge. It can be washed on the surface but never fully sanitised, holds on to whatever it’s touched, and often degrades into tackiness as plasticisers migrate out. Porosity is the reason material matters more than any other single spec: it decides whether a toy can be genuinely cleaned, shared safely after proper sanitising, and kept for years. TPE vs silicone: TPE is a legitimate family of soft plastics, some formulations of it food-adjacent. For insertables it has two structural problems. It’s typically porous, and the word “TPE” tells you almost nothing about which formulation you’re holding. Silicone’s other virtue is legibility: “100% platinum-cure silicone” is a specific, checkable claim from makers with reputations attached.
Where it gets less tidy
Four parts of this that resist a clean answer:
- “Silicone allergy” is rarer than the search volume suggests. True hypersensitivity to silicone appears to be genuinely uncommon. When someone reacts to a toy, the culprit is more often a mystery material mislabelled as silicone, a residue, or a lube ingredient. That’s as far as a spec database can take it; a real reaction is a reason to stop and ask a professional.
- There is no reliable home test for silicone. The community’s flame-test folklore (real silicone ashes, fakes melt) is at best a rough screen and at worst destructive theatre, since blends can pass it. The practical alternative is provenance: buy from makers who state their material and have a community reputation to lose. That’s the filter our catalogue applies.
- Cure inhibition is a maker’s problem that occasionally becomes yours. A patch of silicone that never quite cured, permanently tacky or greasy, can happen when something contaminated the mould. Reputable makers catch these and bin them, or discount them as flops with the flaw described. A tacky surface on a brand-new “silicone” toy from a marketplace with no provenance is a different and worse signal.
- Colourants and glitter live inside the matrix. Pigments, micas, UV-reactives and glow powders used by reputable makers are encapsulated in the cured silicone itself. The material carrying them is doing the safety work, which is one more reason provenance beats appearance.
What to check before you buy (anywhere)
The five-line checklist this whole guide compresses into:
- Material named explicitly — “100% platinum-cure silicone”. “Silicone feel”, “silky TPE blend” and an artful silence all mean something else.
- A maker with a face. Indie workshops with communities and review trails have everything to lose from lying about materials. Anonymous marketplace listings have nothing to lose.
- A sensible base. For anything anal, a flared or anchored base is a hard requirement. (Our specs record base type per size.)
- Specs you can verify — published girth and length you could check with a piece of string. Makers who measure carefully tend to be careful generally; it’s a strong tell.
- A price that makes sense. Platinum silicone is a premium raw material. A very large “silicone” toy at a pocket-money price is answering a question you didn’t ask.
